"Tribute to Muses" (Music Video 2008)

Inspiring women and men is the focus of the project "Tribute to Muses" by sixt sense. The subject-matter "muses" revealed unexpected depths during the research, i was amazed by the diversity of our matter. Not only that i discovered that the subject reaches far beyond mostly bare naked ladies (or sirs), draped on chaise longues and waiting to be portrait (and for subsequent sexual contact). The topic refers to love, to life itself and to death. Artists and their work of art, and the people to inspire them to create those works, who were essential for receiving the very first idea for a piece of art. Everything in life has two sides, and so every man or woman sometimes wishes to become complete by uniting with someone who seems to be opposite enough to fit. Where we see our wells of power and our weak spots may vary very much, but we all seek to complete ourselves, so we can take the next step to develop ourselves.

So we got aware that it was not easy to define the roles that muses play. Are muses the screen or the incidence of light onto it? Are they containers for artistical ideas, or are they the contents itself? Do they sacrifice themselves for art itself or for an artist (artists) or are they victims, used. Are they idols? Well, one could say they are torn between being the well of inspiration for an artist and an integral part of the work itself.

In greek mythology muses were a sisterhood of godesses or spirits, not human beings. Modern times changed this by figuring a muse as a patron of art. This can be either financially, sensually or physically. Muses affect the work of an artist by acting as a stimulant, a motivator, inspiring by giving all their knowledge and thoughts. Famous Muses were Dora Mar (Picasso), Alma Mahler-Werfel(Mahler, Gropius, Kokoschka, Werfel), Amanda Lear (Salvador Dali).

We touch on several, historically more striking persons life-stories, show important moments in form of an audio-visual collage made out of associative and symbolic fragments. Mixed into this collage are pictures of several pieces of art, that stand as examples for the inspirational power of muses. sixt sense (Stefanie Sixt) translates this interpretation of life and work into screenplay which walks the line between movie and still. The result is a new form of storytelling, detached from the linear structures of film. The atmospheres are created by delivering the associative contents and by combining abstract and figurative fragments which are riddled with words and sentences.

The electronic sounds add a new level of meaning to the visuals, sometimes giving them a different twist, sometimes emphasizing their meaning. The audience will figuratively stroll through audio and visuals, the soundscapes of muses and art, artists and inspiration. Sometimes there are glitches between the pictures and the music that change everything, give other, maybe darker notions of pictures which were seen as peaceful and beautiful as possible be just seconds ago. This and also the distance between the screen and the audience creates a different montage of pictures, text and music in every member of the audience. Like the personal cinema in the head which corresponds with Bert Brecht's epic theatre. The music activates the emotionality of people and is itself a symbol for inspiration.
